Glacier Express, the Matterhorn and the Top of Europe in one week

About this trip

Seven days on Switzerland's most spectacular railways — the Glacier Express to Zermatt, the cogwheel line to Jungfraujoch at 3,454 m, Lake Lucerne by paddle steamer and Mount Titlis by rotating cable car, with a Swiss Travel Pass covering every journey.

Switzerland is a country best seen through a train window, and this tour is built entirely around that idea. You travel on four of the world's great scenic rail routes, stay in three alpine bases, and end each day in a town where the mountains start at the end of the street. A Swiss Travel Pass is included, so any spare afternoon can become a spontaneous lake cruise or mountain railway at no extra cost. Families love it because nothing requires hiking experience; honeymooners love it because the views do all the work. Departures run all year — summer for wildflower meadows and hiking, winter for snow-covered villages and Christmas markets.

Visas and practical information

Visa requirements

Switzerland is in the Schengen Area. British passport holders need ETIAS authorisation from 2026. Non-EU passport holders resident in the UK need a Swiss Schengen visa — our team prepares the full file including the required Swiss hotel confirmations.

Allow around 21 days for processing — book with that in mind.

What to pack

  • Warm layers year-round — Jungfraujoch is around −5°C even in July
  • Sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen: glare off snow at altitude is intense
  • Waterproof shoes with grip for glacier walkways
  • Swimwear for hotel spas in Zermatt and Interlaken
  • A power bank — you will take more photographs than you expect

Frequently asked questions

Will altitude sickness be a problem at Jungfraujoch?

The train climbs gradually and most travellers feel nothing beyond mild breathlessness. Move slowly for the first twenty minutes at the top, drink water, and tell your tour manager if you have a heart or lung condition so we can plan a shorter visit.

Is the Glacier Express really eight hours?

The full Chur–Zermatt run is around eight hours including the lunch service. It is the highlight of the tour rather than a transfer day — panoramic windows, seat service and continuously changing scenery.

Can we do this tour in winter?

Yes, and it is spectacular. All the railways run year-round with snow-clearing. Winter departures include Christmas market time in Lucerne and Zurich.

Is the Swiss Travel Pass really included?

Yes — a full consecutive-day Swiss Travel Pass, so any free afternoon can become an extra lake cruise or mountain railway at no cost. It also covers entry to more than 500 museums.

Are halal meals available in the Alps?

Hotel breakfasts and our included dinners are arranged with halal and vegetarian options. Zermatt and Interlaken both have halal restaurants; your tour manager has the list.
