If you have a long weekend rather than a week, this is the trip. The Kaghan valley starts four hours from Islamabad and climbs from pine forest to alpine meadow to the 4,173 m Babusar pass in a single day. It is the most family-friendly of our northern tours: short driving legs, hotels with proper heating and hot water, and a pace that suits children and grandparents. Saif-ul-Malook is the headline, but the Siri Paye meadow above Shogran is the one people talk about afterwards — a green plateau at 3,200 m with the whole Kaghan range around it. The jeep track normally clears around mid to late May and stays open until the first heavy October snow. In early May the lake is often still frozen, which is beautiful in its own right but not what most people expect.
It usually opens in late June and closes with the first snow, often in October. Before then, the tour runs to Lulusar Lake instead, which is still a spectacular day.
